Self-compacting Concretes
Development of self-compacting concretes (SCC) using certain classes of super-plasticizers is in progress under the direction of Professor Jameel Ahmad in the Materials and Structures Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department. SCC has potential for applications in blast mitigation design. SCC also has broad application potential in road building and rehabilitation to prevent potholes or roadbed disintegration, thereby significantly prolonging the life of the systems. A proprietary wire-mesh reinforcement system covered by several patents issued to Professor Ahmad has the potential to make SCC concrete systems comparable to structural steel in strength and durability. The MTS testing system for the SCC, housed in the Materials and Structures Lab of the Civil Engineering Department, is shown below:
