Novel Exercise Systems for Teens > Peter Pedal Bike

Peter Pedal

Peter pedal is an excise bike with integrated video game.  The player drives the game character by pedalling the bike, and controls movement with push buttons.

Two prototypes have been constructed using recycled bicycle and trainer stand components and office chairs.  Several resistance systems have been tested, including an air piston, bike trainer fans, a magnetic resistor, and a friction resistor.  A magnetic tachometer and push button signals are monitored by an Arduino microprocessor that streams the bike's state to a Java game program.

Two custom games have been programmed so far: a chase/escape game (right), and a simple bicycle race that allows for competition between players or against the computer (below).
